Gate moves into contention, Roulston lively in An Post RAS Tour of Ireland

By Sports Media NZ

New Zealand rider Aaron Gate has moved into contention on a demanding third stage of the An Post RAS Tour of Ireland.

Gate is part of the Cycling New Zealand endurance track squad who are using the tour as part of their preparations towards the Rio Olympics, with the Aucklander competing for his An Post Chain Reaction professional team.

The 133km stage to Dingle on the shores of the North Atlantic Ocean proved a serious test with the first category one climb of the tour coming within 10kms of the finish.

Double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston was prominent in a mid-race break, picking up a sprint prime along the way over the first climb. The group was caught approaching the final major climb as a select group powered clear.

Great Britain’s James Cullen, who had been aggressive all day, powered off the front on the descent to claim the victory with Gate outsprinting the rest of the lead group for second place.

Gate moves up to third place on general classification, five seconds behind new leader Clemens Fankhouser (AUT) who won the tour two years ago.

The leading member of the national team is now Regan Gough who is 1:11 back in 19th place.
