Crown Terrace backdrop for 2009 TrustPower Adventure Quest
By Geoff Hunt

The historic Crown Terrace, high above Arrowtown and the Wakatipu Basin, will provide the backdrop for the 2009 TrustPower Adventure Quest on October 3.

Race Director Geoff Hunt says entries are already being lodged for the Quest, which involves both biking and walking/running and a large field including elite athletes, family groups, and orienteering experts is expected to compete.

“We have had excellent support from landowners on the Crown Terrace and we are excited about the new venue for the Quest which centres on a treasure hunt style format. The area is steeped in early Wakatipu history and the scenery is fantastic. It’s a great combination and it will open up some new territory for many competitors.”

The race headquarters will be based on the property of Robina Bodle and Jeff Desbecker who are long time supporters of Southern Traverse events.

“It is great to have their backing for this race and their site is an ideal location for the headquarters. The walking stage of the Quest will be partly on their property as well as on the lower slopes of the Crown Range.”

The biking section is challenging but achievable for all levels. “Competitors will drop from the Terrace down on to the Morven Ferry flats, leading to the banks of the Kawarau River and the lower Arrow River. It is a stunning area and a great ride. With clues / tags also in the Tobins Track area competitors will be able to do a complete loop.”

The TrustPower Adventure Quest involves teams of two and requires good teamwork, orienteering and problem solving. Competitors traditionally come from all over the lower South Island and compete in a serious or social division while the team categories include open, female and mixed.

“The social division is geared for people of all levels and is a great way to start out the summer activities with the event allowing teams to compete for only as long as the legs are willing. Top bikers, runners and multisporters compete in the serious division and there is always a lot of rivalry at this end of the competition. Everyone enjoys the added dimension of clue solving as well.”

Entries are open until just prior to race briefing at 10.00am on October 3.
