The rollout of 56 new cycle stands around the city is almost complete. The sites are high demand and high profile areas that were identified in consultation with community boards and cycling groups.
There are two types of stand - 46 basic U-shaped stainless steel stands, and two sets of five stands that, when installed, spell ‘cycle’. The stands were designed in-house and manufactured by local business Identimark with some parts of the manufacturing process undertaken in Auckland.
Each stand provides parking for two cycles, and is designed to be used by leaning a bike against it, rather than an old style wheel slot stand which can cause buckled wheels.
The U-shaped stand will be the standard model installed throughout the city, including South Dunedin, Macandrew Bay, Port Chalmers, Mosgiel and the CBD, while the sets of five stands will be installed at Moana Pool and the Steamer Basin.
The total cost of the U-shaped stand (installed) is $578 and of the set of five is $3170. The stands have an expected life span of 20 years.
Bike stands reduce clutter in the streetscape and help keep footpaths clear so they look tidier and are less obstructed for pedestrians. The DCC continues to look for high demand areas where there is sufficient space on footpaths to ensure pedestrian movement remains unobstructed and welcomes public input.
