Rescue Helicopter winches a Mountain Bike from the Karapoti Classic
The Wellington Based Westpac Rescue Helicopter Winched a 38yr old male from Wellington who was competing in the Karapoti Classic Mountain Bike Race in the Akatarawa Ranges North of Upper Hutt today at 2:30pm.
The Helicopter responded with a Wellington Free Ambulance Helicopter Paramedic onboard.
The Wellington Free Ambulance Staff at the event were able to give the Helicopter Crew a GPS position for the location of the patient. Due to the location and the type of injuries the patient had to winched out of his location on a Stretcher.
The patient is believed to have fallen off his bike at speed after hitting a rut on the track.
The patient was then transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where he is being treated for Neck and Back Injuries and also lacerations to his leg.
