Record entries for Great Forest Events

Event organisers are expecting record numbers for the annual Great Forest Events, a marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k run or walk through Matariki Forest at Waitarere Beach this Saturday (April 14).

“With four days to go and based off previous event numbers we are looking at a record turnout for Saturday, provided that the weather gods are kind,” says Kathy McMillan, Sport Manawatu’s events and recreation manager.

Despite a national trend of dwindling marathon numbers, this year there are over 70 hardy souls already registered to run or walk the 42km and over 1,800 entrants registered in total. Runners from as far afield as

London and Finland will be joining locals for the race through the forest.

Workplace entries have accounted for a large part of the entrants this year and a special VIP tent will be offered to them, including a free drink, a chance for a massage and a prize for the best dressed team.

Miss McMillan says hopes everyone heads along to support the iconic event, which is run entirely by a volunteer committee.

“It’s a really safe course, being 100% off road, with a nice soft track, making it ideal for all levels of ability. You can even bring your baby buggy along! For those wanting a school holiday activity to take part in, this is a great event for the whole family.”

Online entries close Friday at midday and late entries will be accepted on the day.
